UK Cybersecurity Officer Awarded OBE for Disrupting LockBit Ransomware Group
UK cybersecurity officer Paul Webb has been awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his pivotal role in dismantling the LockBit ransomware group. The OBE, a prestigious honor just two tiers below knighthood, recognizes distinguished achievements at a national level. Webb, the National Crime Agency's (NCA) regional head of multi-threat and border investigations, played a strategic role in Operation Cronos—a UK-led international law enforcement effort targeting LockBit.
Webb's leadership was instrumental in turning the group's infrastructure against its alleged leader, Dmitry Khoroshev. His coordination with international agencies and local police ensured the operation's success in disrupting one of the most notorious cybercriminal networks. The NCA described the operation as "tremendously complex," highlighting Webb's ability to unify efforts across jurisdictions.
While primarily focused on cybercrime in this case, Webb's remit spans serious organized crime, including firearms, drugs, and immigration offenses. The LockBit takedown marks a significant victory in global cybersecurity efforts, though the group has since attempted to rebuild its operations.
